There is a complete cell phone/texting-while-driving ban here in Austin, but all Texas Peace Officers (yes, that’s a thing) are exempt from the law because their job requires them to type on a laptop while driving. There was a motorcyclist hit back in 2010 (dashcam video below) when an Austin cop ran a stop sign while typing. The 71-year-old rider was seriously injured, and the city settled for $250,000.
